How to care for orchids plant while on vacation in Costa Rica

You know, the initial hypothesis of some Costa Rican tourist with a green card a month ago came to your mind in connection with a plant with a magical blue petals. Actually, it was not orchid, but Ilanr aspires of that way. Today she wrote back. She was living in her apartment a plant from Costa Rica called “Bureaurta Paradise” (see http://www.epiquerats.net/bureaurtaparadise-iv.htm). It is a plant from the Costa Rican village of Boulbotar, near the Valle del Botos.

Ilanr’s friends care much more than she about a plant. All she does is that her plants are “guests” in her apartment and that’s all. Her question “How to care for orchids plant while on vacation in Costa Rica?” is a very common question of a traveler. How to care for an exotic plant from far away land, which you do not really know in advance? Especially when you will not be there any more?

I’ve been traveling in South America and Costa Rica for several months now and so far I’ve seen very nice small apartment with plants of over 100 local, but little knowledge about how to take care of them during travel. That’s what I do on my daily basis, that’s how I introduce the subject here.

How to care for orchids plant while on vacation in Costa Rica?

My answer:

1. Think about your climate back home, how will you grow orchids in Costa Rica?

Some species of orchids can grow in some areas of Costa Rica very easily. Especially under tropical conditions. So if you live in temperate climates, think about how will you move your plant to the tropics. Also the temperature will probably rise about 10-20 degrees Celsius (about 18-36 degrees Fahrenheit).

To get tropical orchids, you need a greenhouse. If you do not have a greenhouse, you can grow your orchid on a stove, in a house without a glass window, or even in a refrigerator.

One of the best possibilities to get a tropical orchid is to buy a potted orchid from a reliable seller, or grow it in soil you get from your nearest garden. Or buy an orchid seed, buy a special tropical climate, and take your pot with the newly sprouted seedlings with you on your trip.

In addition to the plants, you need to buy proper care for the plant, some basic equipment, and some specific care.

2. Make sure you will not be away from the plant for a long time.

Yes, this is a basic principle, but the point to be emphasized here. Because when you take care of your plant during travel, this will certainly be an exciting time for you and your traveling partner. And when you take care of your plant, it will grow. That’s how orchid have their own culture, it takes time. And in Costa Rica it can take 1 or 2 months, depending on the area of the country you are in. For you it can take 2 or 3 weeks.

Also in Costa Rica and other tropical countries the people you meet may think that you are crazy, and some even will think that you are neglecting the plant, because they will see it lying on the floor of your home. And a plant you know is important to a lot of people. They may even do something to the plant. So that can be your problem.

But if you decide to live abroad, you need to make sure you will have a window, you can turn on a heat if you will, or simply that you will not be away from the plant for a long time. In this case it is not an advantage, you will get less opportunity to care for your plant.

3. Choose the right seedlings.

The type of orchid seed you need to get depends on where you will be traveling. If you will be in the Tropical lowlands or in the Tropical Highlands, it is best to get tropical orchid seed, like “Paphiopedilum
